Chairman's Report For 2007

2007, our 11th year in the executive search industry, was a terrific year for Ken Clark International (KCI) in obtaining and completing executive search projects. We again began in excess of 250 new search projects in various regions of the world. Our placement ratio was again in excess of 90%. "Speed to placement" without sacrificing quality continued to be one focal point of our service to clients.

Since our beginning in 1996, we have completed well over 3000 search projects for top talent in over 45 countries with continuing concentration in North America and Europe. Interestingly, this past year we did our first work in Vietnam, East Africa and West Africa.

Our clients included many US and European-headquartered, multi-national corporations as well as the regional headquarters of those corporations doing business in North America or Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. Our clients also included a growing number of start-up and fast-growth, public or venture-backed private companies. We also saw an increase in our work for private-equity firms.

We completed search projects for clients in our Focused Industries.

  • Life Sciences Products & Services - Human, Animal and Plant
  • Biotechnologies - Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Chemical and Agricultural
  • Health Care Services - Plans & Programs, Specialized Services, Medical Laboratories & Research
  • Consumer Products & Services - FMCG, Food, Beverage, Personal Care & Hard Goods
  • Scientific Products & Services - Research and Laboratory Tools & Equipment
  • Industrial & Chemical Products & Services
  • Advanced Technology Products & Services - Electronics, Computer Hardware & Software & Telecommunications

We placed top talent into commercial, R&D, manufacturing/supply chain, technical, financial, legal and human resources roles as well as P&L management leadership positions at the country, region and global levels.

In the United States, we re-opened Offices in Boston to serve New England and in Atlanta to serve the southeastern United States.

New Practices launched in 2006 in Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Nordic area as well as our newer Offices in Dubai for the Middle East and Miami for South Florida and Latin America continued to grow as our long-standing multi-national clients in North America and Europe asked us to also support them in these Emerging Market regions. During this year, we opened Offices in Mexico City and Sao Paulo to additionally serve Latin America. Finally, we established an India Practice headed by a national who is an "expert" in the India marketplace for leadership talent.

Our Board of Directors Practice continued to expand to include building Technical Advisory Groups in addition to the standard Corporate Governance Boards in North America and Europe. KCI maintains an active Board of Director Inventory of executives interested in servings on private and public boards. New in 2007 was the expansion of this Practice to include placing many human resources executives for social and educational boards or study groups.

Our NGO Practice serving human health organizations around the world repeated it's success with placements with The Smile Train — a world-wide effort to correct facial deformities in children. We placed Regional Directors in Asia, Africa and Latin America for this client.

Our Global Human Resources Practice continued to meet the increasing demand of US and European multi-national corporations for HR talent that can drive the improvement of human talent to a competitive advantage as well as participate on an equal basis with line executives at the executive committee or management board level. One significant placement was a French national recruited from the Europe organization of a Fortune 100 company to become the #1 HR executive in a multi-national corporation whose headquarters is in Atlanta.

We continued to identify and track "star " candidates in all functions and at all levels — the "best and brightest leaders", so to speak. We have even refined our tracking to separate high-potential "bench strength" candidates from ready now "back-up" candidates for companies concerned about succession planning. We know what's going on in our Focused Industries from a talent acquisition, organization, compensation and development standpoint.

During the year we have observed three continuing trends that we believe deserve mentioning and further discussion with our Clients and Prospects:

  • Recruiting of candidates for positions of global responsibility from all regions equally — North America, Europe and Asia Pacific with particular emphasis on returning expatriates;
  • Recruiting of candidates for positions in highly matrixed organization structures requiring a set of specific and sensitive skills and abilities to " get things done "; and
  • Recruiting of top notch "passive" candidates who become more "active" once they begin seriously considering a career move and the implications for clients;

Lastly, we have significantly improved our website to include Placements, Open Search Projects and a Top Talent Registry. Please visit us at www.kenclark.com.

In July 2007, we celebrated our 11th year serving clients. The number 11 stands for idealism and innovation. While not always perfect in our execution, the employees at KCI start everyday trying to live those principles in the quality, service and results that they bring to clients. They join me in wishing the best to you personally and professionally in the New Year 2008!
